FAQ

WHAT IS AIRBRUSH TANNING?

Airbrush tanning is the process of applying a micro-fine mist of tanning solution to your skin using an airbrush machine. The solution goes on smoothly and evenly, without streaking or an orange color.  This method is different from spray booths, as it is applied to your body by our trained and certified technicians.  Airbrush tanning gives you a healthy glow without the long-term damage associated with UV damage.

IS IT SAFE?

YES! According to the American Academy of Dermatology, the most effective products available are sunless or self-tanning products that contain dihydroxyacetone (DHA) as the active ingredient. DHA has been used in cosmetic preparations for almost 30 years and was listed with the FDA in 1973. It is declared safe and suitable for use in cosmetics and drugs used to color the skin. However, if you are allergic to self-tanners you may be allergic to the solutions in airbrush tanning.

WHAT IS DHA?

DHA (dihydroxyacetone) is a natural carbohydrate compound derived from beets or cane sugar. It’s a food grade product approved for ingestion by the FDA for more than 30 years. In fact, the largest user of DHA is the health supplement industry who uses it in many weight loss products. DHA is also safe for topical use in creams, lotions and tanning solutions. It has a health risk rating of “0” and is considered a non-toxic material.

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO PREPARE FOR MY HEALTHY BRONZE TAN?

The day before your airbrush tan make sure you shower, shave, exfoliate and moisturize! The day of your tan you should not be wearing any lotions, creams or oils. Before your tan, deodorant and makeup should be removed. *Please see the Tanning Tips section of our website.

WHAT DO I WEAR FOR MY HEALTHY BRONZE TAN SESSION?

Attire for women is whatever you are comfortable with, a bathing suit, under garments or nothing at all. Many things can be done to minimize tan lines. The key is your comfort level. Attire for men is boxers, swim trunks or shorts. Your tanning specialist will use the utmost discretion. Wait 5-10mins before getting dressed and then dark, loose fitting clothing may be worn after your tan.

WHAT SHOULD I DO AFTER MY HEALTHY BRONZE SESSION TO KEEP MY TAN LOOKING GREAT?

After your tan is applied you need to wear dark, loose fitting clothing and wait 6-8hrs before showering or sweating (no working out until after your first tan). Moisturized skin is the key to a long-lasting, even tan because it helps to prevent skin from flaking and the color from sloughing off. So the more often you moisturize your skin (after your first shower) the longer your tan will last.

HOW LONG DOES THE TAN LAST?

Your tan should last approximately 7 days, if properly cared for. This ultimately depends on how often your skin naturally exfoliates and how often you moisturize your body! Tan extenders can help prolong your tan. For some people the tan lasts 5-7 days, for others it will last 7-10 days.

HOW LONG DOES THE PROCESS TAKE?

The process takes about 5-10 mins. to apply the tan and then 5-10 mins before redressing. At most your tan session will take about 20 mins.

WHY GET A HEALTHY BRONZE TAN INSTEAD OF USING THE SPRAY BOOTHS?

With an airbrush tan, your airbrush artist will apply precise amounts, and can even out existing tan lines by applying less on already tan areas and more to lighter areas, if desired. Your tan is customizable in other ways to, you can just do your face, neck and arms, waist up or whole body, or control less around the feet & elbows. The color used is specific for your skin tone and your end-result preference. Clients agree that the airbrush tan looks more natural, lasts longer and fades more realistically than a booth spray tan.

With a booth spray tan it’s a “one size fits all” approach, everyone is sprayed with the same color. Tans from spray booths tend to not come out evenly, especially around hands, feet and elbows. Color looks less natural than an airbrush tan and fades more quickly.

WILL IT STAIN MY CLOTHES OR SHEETS?

No, if color rubs off on your clothes or sheets it will wash out! We do suggest you avoid wearing nylon, silk, or wool because it has a tendency to rub off more easily on these fabrics, although a good wash/soak is effective in removing any color that rubs off from the initial bronzer before the first shower. After your first shower the initial bronzer used during application will have washed off and the tanning solution will be set in your skin and shouldn’t rub off onto clothes, and you may wear anything you like.

IS IT SAFE FOR PREGNANT OR NURSING WOMEN TO GET A HEALTHY BRONZE TAN?

Although the DHA is not harmful, you should still consult your doctor!

WHY DO AIRBRUSH TANNING OVER UV TANNING?

Airbrush tanning is an alternative form of tanning. People with sensitive skin or people who have a hard time tanning, be it natural or in tanning beds will find this form of tanning very comforting. One application with airbrush tanning will be equivalent to approximately 6 tanning bed sessions, therefore making it cost effective.

CAN I STILL TAN OUTDOORS OR IN TANNING BEDS?

Of course! But just remember that an airbrush tan does not provide any sunscreen protection, so you should apply sunscreen accordingly. If you choose to expose your skin to UV rays either from the sun or a tanning bed, it is important to use a lotion with SPF to protect you from the sun’s harmful rays.
